Swansea has a highly skilled workforce and innovative facilities in the life sciences sector.
Swansea University is driving forward innovation in the sector. Its Medical School has 800 students and is ranked 5th in the UK overall (REF2021) and 2nd in the UK for its research excellence.
The University has also established the Institute of Life Science which joins interdisciplinary research and development with advanced research facilities and business incubation units to support the growth of a dynamic life science cluster.
It is home to Europe’s first Centre for NanoHealth which combines skills in biotechnology and engineering to help bring forward devices, processes and sensors that can help to detect disease onset early on.
Swansea University and Swansea Council have collaborated to create the Natural Products BioHUB which brings together industry, academia and the community to support resilient business growth and greener futures for all. The goal is to maximise the benefits of natural resources within the agriculture, pharmaceutical and manufacturing sectors in order to minimise disturbances to the environment.
Swansea benefits from two major hospitals, Morriston and Singleton, as well as a new private hospital, HMT Sancta Maria Hospital.
